Solace, a solo exhibition of recent works by New York based textile artist Ann Cofta, features fabric cityscapes that include entire skylines as well as individual buildings and water towers. The artist reflects on time spent in solitude this past year; both indoors, and on long walks in the emptier industrial areas of Queens and Brooklyn. Strolling amid older warehouses and factories, there is a feeling of solidity and continuity, a connection to the past in the present. Collectively the artwork references the structures that surround us, ground us and create stability in an ever-changing world.

Cofta works in a variety of media, including sewing, quilting, embroidery and printmaking. The art in this show employs these techniques in different combinations. All the works are quilted, meaning 3 layers (fabric, batting and fabric) are sewn together to give each piece texture and dimensionality.

Born in New York City, Cofta has lived abroad, and traveled extensively throughout the United States. She has taught art in New York City for over 20 years after receiving her MA in Art and Art Education from Teachers College, Columbia University. She lives in Queens and has an active studio practice in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. More artwork can be seen on her website anncofta.com and on Instagram @anncofta

Cofta has had two previous solo shows, at Yashar Gallery in Brooklyn in 2019, and at Alterwork Studios in Queens in 2020. She has also has been featured in multiple group exhibitions in galleries throughout the Tri-State area, including The Painting Center and Pleiades Gallery in Manhattan; 440 Gallery, Site: Brooklyn Gallery, and La Bodega Gallery in Brooklyn; Plaxall Gallery and Flushing Town Hall in Queens; Ethan Cohen KuBe in Beacon, NY; Gold Coast Arts Center in Great Neck, NY; Silvermine Art Center in New Canaan, CT; and Ely Center of Contemporary Art in New Haven, CT. This past summer she was selected for an Artist Residency at Alterwork Studios in Astoria, New York.
